Log 21, Sermi. My group has made it out of the wetlands and into what Folly calls the Sun Strip. The land is nothing but dunes, and the sun beams down on everything. Sand is practically scalding by midday. How you holding up, Ming?
Doing good, I could do with another shade spot though. Should be one just up ahead. I wanna make a trek across to the wall on the other side of the Sun Strip, we’ll rest for a day before we go. Sounds good. I haven’t seen any animals yet, I don’t think any can live here.
Probably not a lot on the surface, but there’s a good few below. I’ve spotted one species I call sermi. They have a large jet on the back and ride just below the sand. They’re scavengers and eat carcasses and small critters swept up in the sand. The sand consumed is filtered through a specialized organ and shot out from the sides.
So do you ramble because it’s part of your job or is that from doing this alone for so long?
Funny, guess I’ll stay quiet then.
No go on. Tell me about how they're able to tunnel through all that sand. There’s no way the skin is that durable, right?
It kind of is; hard calluses form on the face and upper fin. These not only make the animal more durable but also channel the sand through their crevasses, which helps with speed and turning.
Neat. Where’d you even see these things? I’ve just been staring at sand dunes this whole time.
Displacement patterns in the sand 4 feet below us. I followed them with my eyes up to 7 miles away where I saw one leaping through the sand. I was able to infer its features from there. You probably missed it since you were staring at Droid this whole time.
